About The League
[Written by a board member during 1998]
The Wilson Little League is a volunteer organization that offers baseball and softball to children between the ages of five and fifteen. The league currently has over three hundred children enrolled in the program.
Due to dwindling numbers, Westhaven, John Tyler and Buck Child Little League combined to form Wilson Little League in 1982. This effort proved to strengthen all of the programs by increasing the number of volunteers that worked in the league.
In 1991, Wilson Little League introduced Little League Softball into the community. Softball now makes up approximately one-third of the league.
Over the years, thousands of children have participated in the program. Many of those participants have returned as adults to take an active roll in seeing that the organization continues to serve the youth in our community.
Wilson Little League applies for and is granted a charter from Little League Baseball Inc. annually. Little League Baseball is recognized around the world as an organization that instills positive value in those children who participate in the program.
Wilson Little League forms a partnership between the community and the City of Portsmouth in order to provide a healthy environment for the children who participate. The league provides the leadership that enables these two elements to work together for the good of the program.
As we grow, we must be aware of our past and prepare for our future. This long term strategic plan will improve the leagues ability to prepare for the future by setting goals for each of the next five years. The current Board of Directors have committed their efforts to positive change through long term planning.
The league has many challenging days ahead. We will meet those challenges by providing strong leadership that is driven by a vision of the future.
